Spring Organizing

We have been on a roll up in here--cleaning, moving furniture, organizing...and I am loving it! I guess I am in the spring cleaning mode, but I am also trying to get ready for the next chapter of my life by purging the old and setting up for the new.

Yesterday, I did a lot of organizing. Let me show you what I did!!

The linen closet: This place was a MESS! I mostly needed to fold everything again and then organize all of the crap I had been throwing in there. One of my tricks was to put each complete set of sheets into one of the pillow cases for the set--that way nothing gets misplaced or mixed-up, especially because we really like white sheets and they all look the same!
I also labeled some containers that were becoming catch-alls. Once something is labeled, I have a harder time throwing whatever I want into it.

The dining room/kitchen: My sister gave us this great IKEA shelf!!! It provides a lot more storage than the dresser we had in here before, and more space to serve food when we have guests. I found the brown storage boxes at Joann's for $7 each, and two of them are still empty! I also emptied out some cabinets in our kitchen by moving things around and giving old things away, because we will be getting lots of new goodies for our wedding!

My craft space: The dresser that was in the dining room is now home to all of my craft supplies that I was squeezing into a little rubbermade chest. A few baskets on top keep our day-to-day things corralled so that my table stays neat and ready to work on.

I love organizing and making our home easy to enjoy. Here are some of the "rules" I follow:
  1. If something doesn't have a place that it can "live," I really consider whether I need it or not. I do not leave things lying around and consider them "put away."
  2. I'm a collector and a sentimentalist, so I have a hard time parting with things. For this reason, I need to honor the items that are really important to me by making sure that they have a place that keeps them safe and easy to find and use.
  3. If I haven't used something in a year, I usually give it away.
  4. If something is really important to me, but I don't use it anymore, I try to find a way to re-purpose it into something I will use. When all else fails, giving something I used to love by don't have a use for anymore to a friend or family member always makes me feel good!

great post! i wish i had a linen closet... i have a ikea shelving unit behind the bedroom door to hold our sheets and the like. and one very cramped little closet in the bathroom for medicine/beauty supplies. and our towels are stored above the toilet. it's very classy.... maybe Klassie? is the right way to spell that?

Your rules are excellent! I wish I would follow them! I'm a terrible organizer! I usually know where everything is but it is by no means organized. I'll have to take a picture of the kids toy closet and blog about it. It's incredibly embarrassing, maybe posting it will get me motivated to do something about it! :-)

But good for you for being so organized! It looks great!!
